Dining Room Furniture

The history behind dining room furniture is a lengthy but interesting one. Furniture for dining first appeared in the middle ages when the noble and aristocratic families had their meals together in a great hall. Nowadays, the dining room is still the place where people gather together for meals. However, these days the dining room is generally positioned near the kitchen, so that meals can more conveniently served and cleared up. It was not always like this, though.

During the middle ages, dining rooms were typically located on the floor above where the kitchen is situated. In those times, there were distinct class divisions which were strictly observed. Therefore the servants worked and prepared the meals in the kitchen, and then served their masters on higher floors, symbolic of their own positions in society.

The way in which dining room furniture was designed in the middle ages likewise showed clearly this division of classes. Back then the tables were long, with benches on either side. The head of the household would sit in the middle, and the lower classes would be at the far edges of the table.

As centuries and decades passed, dining with each other started to be much more intimate. This was influenced by a several things, one of which was the religious tension that happened in England when King Henry VIII dissolved monasteries, resulting in the dissolution of large dinner gatherings which in fact had already turned out to be not practical then. Smaller sized parlor rooms were created for dining and the great halls were left for more special occasions and festivities.

These days, we seldom see long extended tables getting used, apart from people living in mansions and palaces. Typical households normally use a small square, rectangular or round table where friends and family can sit down comfortably in individual dining chairs rather than long benches to share their meals.

Today, dining room furniture comes in a variety of designs, both classic and modern, and a variety of colors, make, sizes and shapes, and it can be manufactured in various different materials, including wood, leather, glass, metal, etc. The look and feel of dining rooms in the present day has come a long, long way.
